Minor Illness

This unique programme empowers the nurse to manage the majority of patients who request urgent appointments in primary care. From a solid background in basic science and evidence-based practice, it presents the essential examination techniques and clinical skills now expected of nurses in primary care. The programme’s flexible structure facilitates its application in a variety of settings, enabling it to be used effectively both in areas with strong central support and where local resources are limited. The programme has been extensively evaluated over two years by a ‘beacon’ practice, with the full support of the Department of Health.

The flexible open learning format provides a route for nurses to expand their skill base and inform their practice. The material supplies up-to-date, research-based protocols which, when used in conjunction with supervised consultations in a local setting, ensure that the nurse’s management of minor illness is safe and effective.
