'Summative assessment is now a legal requirement for all doctors
finishing vocational training for general practice. By using
this tape a GP Registrar will know exactly what is involved in the
videotape component of summative assessment and the level of
consulting ability required to pass. The tape is, however, more
than a guide to summative assessment. It is also an excellent
tool for learning about he consultation. Seeing a doctor
actually identifying a patient's concern is worth ten readings of 'how
to consult' books. I would recommend this package to GP
registrars, trainer and course organisers both for summative
assessment purposes and for the wider area of teaching consulting
skills'.

General Practice Education, West of Scotland
Contents
The package
is a training resource for general practice trainers and registrars designed to assist
them in:
- addressing the issues
surrounding the teaching, understanding, practice ands assessment of consultation skills
in general practice
- preparing for the summative assessment of minimal
consultation competence that is now a compulsory part of vocational training
The package is designed to be used by a
trainer and registrar working together, and by course organisers for small group teaching.
The package comprises two video tapes and
large format workbook.
Video 1 covers the technical pitfalls of video recording and provides a range of
consultations containing obvious failures, mediocrity and clear passes.
Video 2 contains examples of consultations covering more of the problems commonly
found in analysing summative assessment video submissions. They are based on
'real-life' consultations and reflect a spread of registrars' abilities.
The workbook complements the videos and is
designed to be as flexible as possible.
These videos are co-productions of The
Interactive Skills Unit of the Department of General Practice at The University of
Birmingham, and the West Midlands Postgraduate General Practice Education Unit.
