Specific points
PAPER TYPES
-
Academic papers: 5000-8000 words. Scholarly
papers based upon empirical research, which are of a qualitative or
quantitative nature, or which make a significant contribution to
policy-orientated discussions.
-
Research notes: 2000-3000 words. Shorter
papers for the early publication of important research findings, or
which detail issues for practice or policy making that are informed by
academic research.
-
In practice: 2000-4000 words. Practical
papers that describe topics of clinical or managerial importance.
-
Reviews: 500-1000 words.
1 Review essays: 2000-3000 words, focusing on a particular theme
within recently published literature.
2 Head to heads: reviews on a single book from perspective of two
or more reviewers looking at the same work from different angles.
3 Occasional reviews: from time to time, the journal will publish
occasional reviews of single books.
-
Letters about healthcare management or related
topics are welcomed. Publication is at the editors' discretion.
Papers should be set out with each section starting on a
separate page; title page, abstract, keywords, text of paper,
acknowledgements, references, boxes, tables, figures and captions. TEXT
-
All manuscripts and correspondence should be typed,
double spaced with 3cm margins at the top and left hand side, and the
pages numbered.
-
Structure papers to enable readers to identify the
principle arguments or subjects under discussion.
-
The title page should include the paper title; names,
qualifications, current appointment, affiliated institution, and
location of each author; the name, address, telephone, fax and email of
the corresponding author.
-
Papers should generally conform to the conventional
format of the abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion,
conclusions, references.
-
When first using abbreviations in the text, the term the
author wishes to abbreviate should be spelt out in full with its
abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter the abbreviation should be
used (in capital letters and unpunctuated).
-
Whenever possible give numbers of patients/subjects
studied (not percentage alone).
-
Express all scientific measurements (except blood
pressure - mm Hg) in S1 units.
FIGURES, TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS
-
Figures should not duplicate information provided in the
text or tables. They should be on a separate sheet and have a
caption.
-
Tables should only be used when data cannot be expressed
clearly in any other form. They should not duplicate but rather
supplement information given in the text. They should be typed on
a separate sheet and have a caption. Do not use vertical rules in
tables.
-
Illustrations may be line drawings or black-and-white
photographs of good quality, preferably with a gloss finish.
Illustrations will not be returned after publication unless specifically
requested. All illustrations are submitted at the owner's risk,
the publisher accepts no liability for loss or damage while in
possession of the material.
REFERENCES
-
The style of referencing is the Harvard system.
-
Cross-referencing should be inserted in parentheses in
the text in full for single or dual authors (Smith and Eades, 2003) but
abbreviated (Owen et al. 1999) for multiple authors.
-
References should be listed alphabetically at the end of
the paper.
-
Each reference should give the names and initials of all
the authors or editors (unless there are more than six, when the first
three should be given followed by et al.), the year of publication, the
title of the paper or chapter, and the full title of the journal or
book. Journal references should include the volume number, and
page numbers. Book references should include the publisher, place
of publication, and page numbers where necessary.
-
Information from manuscripts not yet in press, papers
reported at meetings, or personal communications should be cited in the
text, not as formal references.
-
Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references.
PROOFS
Proofs will be sent to the author submitting the paper and
must be returned promptly. This will allow correction of
printer's and similar errors. Major changes will not be
entertained and authors may be charged for excessive amendments at this
stage.
REPRINTS
Reprints may be ordered when proofs are returned.
