Guidelines for book reviewers

Remember, this journal is about work based learning.  Therefore you might want to review a book from the point of how useful it might be in the work situation.  Would you use it in your consulting room or clinic if you are a nurse or GP, or in the office if you are a practice manager?  Would your practice be safer or your work better informed if you had this book?

Perhaps you would read a book, not for case oriented guidance, but for a general overview of a subject area.  How would such a book help you and how might it help others?

Can you compare it with any other book you have used in the same subject area?  You might want to compare it to learning media, such as IT.

If the book is on the subject of learning and professional development, do not forget that the journal's readers come from different backgrounds.  Some books are very specific and address profession specific issues - as a reviewer you should be aware that not all readers will understand what these are.  You can help the reader by spelling things out and by generalising.
